ARTIST STATEMENT

Color has always been important to me; it can articulate feelings in a way that subject matter
cannot. I never approach a blank canvas with a pre-determined outcome - only with overall colors
that express my mood at the moment. Once the ground color has been laid, it dictates what the
painting wants to become and I have learned to listen.
I view my style as Expressionist; I want the painting to be an emotional experience for the viewer.
I achieve this through color and form since both are subjective and associative.
The colors I use are not necessarily the colors from nature even though my subject matter is
primarily nature itself. Besides having an affinity for the land and sea, one other reason I enjoy
painting landscapes is that they are not affected by politics or trends. I am not painting to make
any statement about society; I paint for the joy of painting.
My imagery is representational. It is suggestive without getting bogged down in detail. The shapes
are simple, the mood changes with the light. Therefore I am quite careful about the titles I give my
work. I do not want to impose my associations onto the painting. If someone sees a beach where
another sees a field, I am quite delighted. My objective is to have the observer imagine him/herself
in the space and be reminded of another time and place.
