- Log selection; planning and cutting the log to get the best yield in bowl blanks
- Wood selection; straight grain or figured grain, use of natural edge
- Preparing the bowl blank
- Design elements
- Tool use, sharpening techniques
- Mounting the bowl blank - discuss the various options

- Shaping the outside and inside of the bowl/platter
- Finishing the rough-turned piece; scraping-finishing techniques
